The small peninsula, or promontory, Dyrhólaey on the south coast of Iceland, not far from the village of Vík. It was formerly an island of volcanic origin. In the distance, Reynisfjara's black lava columns rise out of the sea. According to legend the needles were formed when two trolls were trying to drag a three-masted ship to land. When daylight broke they turned to stone.
